Municipal primary and lower secondary school

The Municipality of Aarhus examines the Danish proficiency of bilingual children. This is called language screening. The language screening determine whether the child can attend a relatively short but intense Danish course in “The International Welcome Class”, or whether a pupil needs additional support to learn Danish as a second language in “A Reception School”.

Enrolment
For enrolment in the either the “The International Welcome Class”, or “A Reception School” you will have to fill in this form and send it to the address shown on the form.

International welcome class
Municipality of Aarhus offers an international welcome class for children with an appropriate school background from their home country.

The International Welcome Class is for newly arrived children between the ages of 7 and 9 years (corresponding to form levels 1-3). These classes provide children with the opportunity to complete a relatively short but intense Danish course before they are transferred to a regular class in their school district. The class is located at Læssøesgade Skole, Læssøesgade 24, 8000 Aarhus C.

The education in the international welcome class is free and the City of Aarhus will pay for the transportation to and from the welcome class.

Prerequisites
Professional educators determine whether the child has the prerequisites for attending the International Welcome Class. Among other things, they look at whether the child:

  • has had a reasonable and age-appropriate schooling in the home country
  • has knowledge of the Latin alphabet
  • is learning to read and write in the native language

Reception schools
When language screening shows that a pupil needs additional support to learn Danish as a second language, the pupil will be referred to a reception school.

Reception schools are regular schools where less than 20% of pupils in any one year speak Danish as a second language. At the reception school a number of teachers possess special expertise in teaching Danish as a second language.

The Municipality of Aarhus pays the costs of travelling to and from the reception schools
